On July 2, ordered by Gen. Winfield Scott Hancock, the First Minnesota rushed down the slope of Cemetery Ridge in a countercharge against 1600 Confederates. Of the 262 men in the 1st Minn., only 47 survived. Over 80% of them fell in just five minutes. They saved a few minutes so reinforcements could get there. One survivor wrote: "Every man realized in an instant what that order meant." |
