Maddie's third Battlefield Trip was to Antietam (Sharpsburg). She wanted to see all the historical sites. We feel that this was another very important Civil War Battle. It placed the Union Gen. George McClellan up against Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. This battle had 40,000 Southern and 87,000 Northern soldiers. Neither side gained a decisive victory here, but it delayed the recognition of the Confederate Government in Europe. Also, it gave President Lincoln an opportunity to issue the priliminary Emacipation Proclamation. Lincoln met McClellan at Antietam. This battle was fought on September 17, 1862. |
