Lee seized the moment and united his two wings. Then he attacked Chancellorsville with a massive blow. That drove Hooker and his whole army back to the river. During the battle a cannonball struck a pillar at Chancellor House, a large piece of wood fell and just about knocked out Hooker. Captain Candler of his staff said " The blow which the General received seems to knocked all the sense out of him...for the remainder of the day he was wandering, and was unable to get any ideas in his head." |
