The Key High Ground

May 3, 1863 (approx. 7:00am)

. Hazel Grove was a key high ground for the artillery.

At the end of the fighting on May 2nd. The Union artillery had control of the high ground between the lines. For some reason Hooker had the Union artillery abandon this site.

The Confederates seized this ground for the final assault. They massed 35 cannon here to fire directly at the Union lines. Hooker was forced to retreat from Chancellorsville.
