This Georgian style mansion was used byUnion commander Gen. Ambrose E. Burnside during the battle. After the fighting Clara Barton and Walt Whitman worked at Chatham caring for the wounded here. Chatham was across the Rappahanock River from Fredericksburg. |

The Leader of the Confederate forces that faced Gen. Burnside was the Great Robert E. Lee. Chatham had a special place in Gen. Lee's heart because it was where his wife Mary Custis lived when he courted her many years before. |
