This is the site of the upper pontoon bridge crossing. Gen. Burnside decided on Dec. 11, 1862 to construct three pontoon bridges to get the Union Army into Fredericksburg. At about 3:00am they started to build the bridges under fierce confederate fire by Gen. Barksdale's men. Many of the engineers were wiped out. |
